By Lisa Slagle, owner of Wheelie Creative
As the owner of an outdoor creative agency, I go to a LOT of industry events. I got really tired of seeing only men with cameras at every event. A few years ago, I started a weird project where every time I saw a working photographer, I would snap a pic of them with my iPhone. And yep, tons of pics of dudes and ONE pic of a lady with a camera. This brought me into further research-- less than 20% of action sports photogs are female, although there is no research as to WHY this is. I decided I could help. I wanted to create a space where women could play with cameras, lug gear around, and get the shot with some help from a pro. Thus, Wheelhouse Workshops was born. Female photographers. Female athletes. Lady power. The first one is going to be in Whitefish on Jan 5-7 taught by Abby Cooper. The loose plan right now is as follows: FRIDAY evening: Meet and Greet. SATURDAY: On-snow workshops taught by professional action sports photographers (female) and resort-sponsored athletes (female). SUNDAY: post production indoors taught by Wheelie Creative, prep for art show SUNDAY EVENING: Art show at a local spot for workshop attendants and their friends and families and workshop sponsors. They go home with a framed print of their favorite shot from the workshop. We are currently gathering sponsors for the events, and the response rate has been ridiculous and overwhelming. We'd love all hands on deck to help make some positive change in the creative side of our industry! If you have any ideas or want to sponsor, teach, or attend a workshop, feel free to shoot me an email: [email protected] Thanks for your support, Lisa Slagle |
